Protect Your Windows With Hurricane Window Film

If you live in a part of the country which often experiences frequent hurricanes then you probably need to spend some time thinking of some ways to protect your property in a storm. High speed winds can cause all sorts of objects to fly through the air which could cause damage to your windows. The wind itself can also blow out your windows, or take your roof off. It is very important to properly protect your property so that this doesn't happen to you.

Choosing Hurricane Window Protection

When choosing hurricane windows, there are some important things you need to consider when looking at the different window protection methods on the market:

- Can you install this product by yourself? Is it easy to install?
- How much does this product cost? Also remember to include the cost if you need a professional
- What do you need to do (if anything) before the storm hits. Are the shutters fixed to your home and simply need shutting? Or do they need hanging every time?
- Think about what you want to protect - You should pay special attention to doors and windows, as these are the weak points of your property and may need extra help.

Using shutters

Accordion Shutters

These types of shutters typically come in one or two pieces and are fixed to your house all year round. This means that you do not have to take them off or put them back on. These fold over the window to protect it. These are very easy to close, one person can do it by himself.

Bahama Shutters

These shutters are fixed above the window and are just propped open when they are not used. These also provide quite a lot of shade from the sun. The shutters should then be lowered and fixed to the wall. One person can put these shutters over the windows fairly quickly.

Roll Down Shutters

These shutters are also fixed above the windows. These are similar to shutters on shops, when they are needed you just need to press a button and they will roll out and cover your window. These are much more expensive however they are really easy to use! It's important to choose one that has some form of battery backup, otherwise you may be unable to open them again if the hurricane damages the power.

Storm Panels

These are the simplest solution, they are just sheets of steel or aluminum which are attached to the window. These need to be physically installed just before a storm, this can be very time consuming and you'd be hard pushed to do it on your own.

Special Glass for Hurricane Window Protection

There is also impact resistant glass, this is proving very popular. This can be fitted into windows and glass doors. These are the easiest as you don't even need to press a button, the window is already protected.

It is possible to install this glass in existing homes, however it is very expensive. You can't do this project by yourself, you need assistance from a professional so that your home will be properly protected.
